Can I back a project anonymously on Ulule?

Yes. On Ulule, you can make your contribution anonymous when you pay, or later from “My contributions”, even after the campaign has ended. Anonymity hides your identity from the public, but not from the project team: they still receive the information they need to contact you and send your reward.

What is hidden when my contribution is anonymous?

By default, contributions are public: they appear in the project's list of backers (“Contributions” tab on the project page) and on the backer's public profile. Once your contribution is anonymous:

  • in the project's list of backers, you appear without your name, username, city or profile picture;
  • the project no longer appears in the list of supported projects on your public profile;
  • any comment left with your contribution is also shown anonymously.

Your contribution still counts in the number of backers and in the amount raised by the project.

How do I make my contribution anonymous when I pay?

  1. Choose your reward or the amount of your support, then go to the payment step.
  2. In the dedicated box, turn on the anonymity option.
  3. Complete your payment.

You can check and change this setting at any time afterwards, from your contribution details (see below).

How do I make a past contribution anonymous?

  1. Click your username at the top right of the site.
  2. Click “My contributions”.
  3. Click the contribution to open its details page.
  4. Turn on the “Anonymity” option.

There is no time limit: you can change this setting during the campaign or after it has ended. It applies to your presence across the whole project.

Can I make my contribution visible again?

Yes. Go back to the contribution's details page in “My contributions” and turn off the “Anonymity” option.

How do I make all my contributions anonymous at once?

  1. Click your name at the top right, then “Settings”.
  2. Open the “Privacy” tab.
  3. Tick the box that makes all your contributions anonymous (the second box).
  4. Save.

Good to know:

  • this setting applies to contributions you have already made, not to future ones. For a new contribution, turn on the anonymity option when you pay;
  • if you save this page with the box unticked (for example to change another option), all your contributions become visible again, including those you made anonymous one by one. Check the box before saving.

What does the project team see if my contribution is anonymous?

Anonymity only affects what the public sees. Ulule shares with the project team the information they need to talk with you and send your reward, in their management space and in the export of the backer list. At a minimum, this includes your email, your username, the amount paid, the payment date and method, and the reward chosen. If you provided them, the team also receives your first and last name, your delivery and billing addresses and your phone number.

Why contribute anonymously?

Backing a project can reveal sensitive or very personal information (religious or philosophical beliefs, sexual orientation, political opinions, etc.). For example, supporting a political project indirectly reveals your political views. The anonymity option helps you protect your privacy.
